Day to Play

Top: Target
Vest: 41 Hawthorn via Stitchfix (last season)
Necklace: Baublebar
Sunnies: Rayban

Wanted to try something new on with today's post. If you like it, let me know and I can make it a more regular feature! The idea is an outfit you can take from "Day" to "Play".

I'm fortunate to be able to dress pretty casually for work depending on the day and meetings with clients, but even still sometimes when work rolls right into evening plans, I wish I had a better look for a night out.

So here are my secrets to seamlessly switching things up:

1. Carry a large handbag (it holds your shoes)

2. Change your shoes (you know, the ones in your large handbag)

3. Remove a layer and/or add an accessory

Boom. Done.

For day, I'm jazzing up my basic black look with some Tory Revas and this herringbone vest I scored from Stitchfix this winter. Side note -- if you haven't heard of Stitchfix, you're missing out. Check it out here. When it's time for city cocktails with a girlfriend, I switch out the flats for pumps, lose the vest, and add a simple necklace to dress the look up a bit. Easy, breezy, pass me a martini.

What do you think?

Sk8ter Skirt

Skirt: Nordstrom
Top: TJ Maxx (old)
Shoes: Coach

I can't get enough of this skater skirt I scooped up from Nordstrom during the anniversary sale this summer. It's a perfect transition piece -- the material is well suited for cooler weather while the length and style give you some flexibility to style for summer.

I've been experimenting with different pieces to pair with this skirt (very excited to start wearing it with black tights) and I love how it looks with this sheer, neutral blouse. This was also a perfect excuse to wear my amazing Coach pumps I found at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago. I can't get enough of this bow detail -- obsessed.

The shoes and skirt are the statement pieces that do all the talking for this sort of simple look. I'm so excited skater skirts are in at the moment because they are super flattering to my shorter frame - the flared skirt falls short making your legs look miles long, something that's not easy to accomplish with my 5'2 frame!

Neutral Lace

Top: TJ Maxx
Jeans: Kensie
Shoes: Alloy
Necklace: Aldo Accessories (old || similar here
Bracelet: J. Crew Factory
Watch: Michael Kors
Bag: Louis Vuitton

Fine, so it's fall today. That doesn't mean I can't rock this neutral end of summer look before accepting that cold weather is making itself at home here in Boston for the next few 87 months.

I've worn this lace top several ways this summer. I loved this look for keeping things simple and neutral with some really nice details. The lace top, the suede lace up shoes, and some jewels go a long way to making this outfit stand out.

I've officially retired my summer Louis until next season. I'm ready to move on to crisp, dark, romantic colors for the fall season. However, I think you may be seeing a few more white looks as we continue the transition to fall….rules, schmules.

Do you retire any summer wardrobe staples?

Salmon Style

Shorts: TJ Maxx
Top: Ann Taylor
Shoes: Alloy
Necklace: Forever 21
Bag: Aldo
Watch: Michael Kors

I mean, hello. Can we talk about my natural scowl? My favorite way to show I'm having the best time ever is to look as serious and potentially angry as possible. Guys, this is how I show I know FASHION. But seriously, I'll work on showing a hint of a smile somewhere, sometime.

I bought these shorts at the beginning of the summer season and have been debating the best way to style them ever since. I finally landed on a dressier look, keeping the shorts the statement of the outfit with complementary neutral colors. I'm not wild about shorts in general, but I wanted to give them a try this season - I featured two on the blog so far so it's a good start.

I am obsessed with these shoes - this style has been trendy for about a year now I'd say and I've been waiting a.) to see how long it would stay and b.) for the perfect pair that wouldn't break the bank. I found this pair at Alloy (a longtime secret shoe haven for me) and got them during a flash sale. Also love this statement necklace that I snagged from Forever 21 - really helps jazz up the look and draws attention back to the shorts by living in the same color family. Baublebar and ILY Couture have some amazing sales right now - it's a good time to stock up on some statement pieces. The best part is they work in any season!

I haven't carried this bag in a while - I remember seeing it in Cosmo one month and realizing I had to have it once I realized it was from Aldo. I remember waiting for a table at Cheesecake Factory in the Providence Place Mall with manfriend and telling him I had to run to the restroom while I ran upstairs to purchase the bag. He's clearly a keeper for putting up with me.

TGIF everyone - any funny stories about some of your favorite purchases you'd care to share? Love to hear them!
